Patna: Four policemen posted at an excise police station in Bihar’s Nawada district have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a youth in Jamui, officials confirmed on Saturday. The accused include two assistant sub-inspectors and two home guard personnel.
According to police, the action was taken after a complaint alleged that the officials demanded money in exchange for releasing a detained man and his vehicle. The youth had reportedly been stopped earlier this week on suspicion of transporting liquor.
During a search operation at the residence of one of the accused officers, authorities recovered ₹1.5 lakh in cash, which is believed to be linked to the case. The arrests were carried out by the Jamui Police following the registration of a formal complaint.
The case surfaced after a local resident approached police claiming his brother had gone missing and later called to say he was being held and that a large sum was being demanded for his release. The family eventually arranged ₹1.5 lakh, which was allegedly handed over to secure his freedom along with his car.
Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether more individuals were involved. He also acknowledged receiving multiple complaints in the past regarding similar allegations against excise personnel and assured strict action.
The incident has raised concerns about misuse of authority and prompted calls for tighter oversight of enforcement agencies in the region.
