A matchmaking request by a 37-year-old divorced professional has ignited widespread debate on social media after his list of expectations for a prospective bride was shared by dating coach Oendrila Kapoor. The man, described as an IIT graduate working in a senior corporate role, reportedly approached the platform seeking a partner who met a highly specific and controversial set of conditions.
According to the account shared online, the man insisted that his future partner should be under 30 years of age, belong to a Brahmin community, and have no prior romantic or sexual history. The request, particularly the emphasis on “zero past,” drew immediate criticism from the matchmaker, who questioned both the reasoning and the apparent double standards, given that the man himself had been married before.
When asked to justify his preferences, the individual reportedly cited unspecified research suggesting a link between a woman’s past relationships and future fidelity. However, when confronted with the same logic being applied to him, he allegedly dismissed the comparison, stating that it did not apply in the same way to men. The response further intensified concerns about gender bias and entrenched patriarchal attitudes reflected in such expectations.
The matchmaker ultimately declined to take him on as a client, calling his criteria unrealistic and problematic. She also pointed out that women fitting such traditional expectations would likely come from conservative backgrounds where a significant age gap and the man’s divorced status could be seen as a disadvantage.
The incident quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions online. While a section of users argued that individuals are entitled to personal preferences, a larger number criticised the demands as hypocritical and reflective of outdated thinking. Many highlighted the contradiction between the man’s own life experience and the standards he sought to impose on a potential partner, with several users calling out what they saw as entitlement and gendered double standards in the arranged marriage space.
The episode has once again brought attention to evolving dynamics in India’s matchmaking culture, where traditional expectations often clash with changing social values, sparking conversations around equality, autonomy, and fairness in modern relationships.
