Nassau: The disappearance of an American woman in the Bahamas has taken a dramatic turn after her husband, Brian Hooker, was taken into custody for questioning, casting doubt over his earlier account of a boating accident.

Authorities confirmed that the arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation into the case, though no formal charges have been filed so far. Officials said the move was based on emerging grounds that required further scrutiny.
According to investigators, Brian Hooker initially claimed that his wife fell from a small dinghy into the water near Elbow Cay while the couple was returning to their yacht. He said strong winds and currents separated them, preventing him from rescuing her.
He also told authorities that the boat lost power after she fell overboard and that he later made his way to shore to alert officials.
Search operations involving the Royal Bahamas Police Force and other local rescue teams were launched soon after the incident was reported. Despite extensive efforts by sea and air, no trace of Lynette Hooker has been found so far.
Officials have now shifted their focus from rescue to recovery after several days without success.
Family members have raised concerns over inconsistencies in the incident. Lynette’s daughter questioned the sequence of events and called for a thorough investigation, saying there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance.
Her relatives have also highlighted past issues in the couple’s relationship, adding to their concerns about the circumstances of the case.
The United States Coast Guard has opened a criminal investigation, working alongside Bahamian authorities. Officials are examining all aspects of the incident, including the husband’s statements and evidence gathered from the scene.
The US State Department has acknowledged the case and is coordinating with local officials while providing support to the family.
As the investigation progresses, the case remains shrouded in uncertainty. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, and the focus remains on determining exactly what happened in the waters off the Bahamas.
