Indore: Buoyed by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) historic victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation elections, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday expressed confidence that the party would continue to expand its footprint in Kerala.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, Yadav said the BJP’s success in wresting control of the Thiruvananthapuram civic body from the CPI(M) marked a significant political shift in the southern state, which has traditionally been dominated by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
“We have won the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation elections. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP has become the world’s largest party,” Yadav said. He added that the BJP’s victory flag was flying across the country and that party-led state governments were continuously setting new benchmarks of good governance.
The BJP’s win in Thiruvananthapuram is particularly significant as it ended over four decades of Left control in the state capital’s civic body, breaching a 45-year-old stronghold of the CPI(M). This comes a year after the BJP secured its first-ever Member of Parliament from Kerala, a state known for its largely Left-of-centre political landscape.
“I hope the BJP will be seen making further gains in Kerala in the coming times,” Yadav asserted, expressing optimism about the party’s future prospects in the state.
While the Congress-led UDF emerged as the overall winner in Kerala’s local body elections, delivering a setback to the ruling LDF, the BJP’s capture of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation stood out as a major breakthrough. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the development as a “watershed moment” in Kerala’s political history, signalling a changing electoral dynamic in the state.
