PM Narendra Modi Announces IIM Bangalore’s First Overseas Campus in Indonesia to Strengthen India-ASEAN Education Ties

New campus at Singhasari SEZ in Malang to offer executive education initially, followed by degree programmes focused on AI, sustainability, healthcare and digital transformation.

(Jakarta) Indonesia, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) will establish its first international campus in Indonesia, marking a major step in expanding India’s higher education presence abroad. The announcement was made during the Prime Minister’s official visit to Indonesia alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The proposed campus will come up at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Malang and is expected to become a centre for advanced management education catering to students and professionals from Indonesia as well as other ASEAN countries. The initiative reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Indonesia while enhancing educational collaboration across the Indo-Pacific region.

The overseas expansion of IIM Bangalore follows similar global initiatives by premier Indian institutions, including Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in Dubai, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in Abu Dhabi and Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Zanzibar. These initiatives highlight India’s increasing role in delivering quality education and academic excellence on the global stage.

The new campus aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages leading Indian educational institutions to establish an international footprint and expand access to globally recognised academic programmes.

Academic offerings at the Indonesia campus will focus on emerging business and leadership priorities. The curriculum is expected to cover areas such as global supply chain management, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management. Students and participants will also benefit from interactions with industry leaders, international experts and renowned academicians.

The project will be implemented in two phases. In the initial stage, the institute will launch executive education programmes designed for senior professionals, government officials and business leaders. Based on the success of this phase, the campus will later introduce full-fledged management degree programmes.

The initiative will be implemented through a Memorandum of Understanding between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama, the development authority managing the Singhasari Special Economic Zone.

Besides providing management education within Indonesia, the campus will also offer participants opportunities for short academic immersion visits to IIM Bangalore’s Bengaluru campus, enabling them to experience India’s innovation ecosystem, entrepreneurship culture and industry practices.

The establishment of the Indonesia campus is expected to strengthen educational cooperation between the two countries while positioning Indonesia as an important regional destination for quality management education. It also reinforces India’s efforts to expand knowledge partnerships and leadership development opportunities across the Global South.
