New Delhi, September 9 : Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the Indian Men’s Football Team for clinching the bronze medal at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, terming it the beginning of a “new era of Indian football.”
Taking to X, Mandaviya wrote: “Proud Moment for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to our Men’s Football Team for securing the Bronze Medal at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. A new era of Indian football.”
India scripted history after defeating Oman 1(3)-1(2) in a dramatic penalty shootout in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Oman, ranked 79th in FIFA rankings, entered the contest as favourites against India, who currently stand at 133. The Blue Tigers also stunned 106th-ranked Tajikistan earlier in the tournament, underlining their ability to overcome higher-ranked opponents.
The podium finish holds extra significance as India, traditionally part of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), competed against Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) nations — a region known for tougher competition. By defeating two stronger sides, the Blue Tigers showcased progress and ignited fresh hopes for the future of Indian football.
Oman took the lead in the 55th minute through Jameel Al Yahmadi, but India equalised in the 80th minute when substitute Udanta Singh Kumam headed in a long throw flicked on by Danish Farooq. The goal stood after a lengthy VAR check.
Oman’s Ali Al Busaidi was sent off in the 96th minute, giving India a numerical advantage in extra time, but both teams failed to score as the contest moved to penalties.
In the shootout, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Rahul Bheke, and Jithin MS converted for India. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu emerged as the hero, producing a decisive save against Al Yahmadi to seal the 3-2 shootout win.
India’s bronze medal marks one of their most significant results in recent years, proving the side’s resilience and ability to compete beyond the SAFF region. The win has been hailed as a potential turning point for Indian football, with fans and officials alike calling it the dawn of a new era.
