Amit Shah to Lay Foundation of India’s First National Cooperative University ‘Tribhuvan’ in Gujarat

NEW DELHI, 04 JULY : Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will perform the ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ and lay the foundation stone of “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University (TSU), India’s first national-level cooperative university, in Anand, Gujarat, on July 5, 2025. The event will witness the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Union Ministers of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal Gurjar and Muralidhar Mohol, Gujarat’s Education Minister Rishikesh Patel, Cooperation Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma, and several other dignitaries.

Envisioned under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guided by Shri Amit Shah, the establishment of TSU marks a historic step towards empowering India’s cooperative movement. The university aims to strengthen capacity building and promote the mantra of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ by integrating cooperation, innovation, and employment creation into a unified model.

The TSU will offer specialized education, training, and research in cooperative management, finance, law, and rural development, thus addressing the skill and knowledge gaps across the cooperative sector. Its structure will follow the National Education Policy 2020, offering flexible and multidisciplinary programs including PhDs, degrees, diplomas, and certifications tailored to managerial, supervisory, and operational levels.

The university plans to establish schools at its main campus and extend its presence through branches in various states. A major initiative is the creation of a national network to connect with over 200 cooperative institutions within four years, standardizing cooperative education and training across India.

To address the lack of trained manpower, TSU aims to skill around 20 lakh cooperative society personnel—including those from PACS, dairy, and fisheries—over the next five years. It will also build a pool of qualified faculty through dedicated PhD programs in cooperative studies.

Recognizing the current lack of focused research in cooperatives, especially in rural-centric innovation, the university will establish a Research and Development Council to advance affordable technologies and coordinate with leading global institutions to bring best practices to India.

On the same occasion, Amit Shah will participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” tree plantation campaign, a growing people’s movement inspired by PM Modi. He will also unveil an NCERT educational module aimed at introducing school children to the principles and impact of the cooperative movement in India.

The foundation of TSU represents a significant leap in transforming India’s cooperative landscape by creating an institutional backbone for inclusive rural development and innovation-led growth.
