Delhi Protests: UPSC Aspirants Demand Justice After Flooding Tragedy

Delhi, August 1, 2024: Protests are ongoing in Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, as UPSC aspirants demand justice after three students died in a basement flooding incident at an IAS coaching center. The protests, which started on July 27, have been going on for five days.

The students are demanding action against corruption and poor infrastructure, which they believe led to the incident. The Delhi Police have arrested seven people, including the owner and coordinator of the coaching center.

One protesting student told ANI that the authorities are making false promises to end the protest. “They pressured me to stop protesting, but I raised corruption issues and said we won’t stop until our demands are met,” the student said.

Another protester criticized the lack of real action from the administration: “They want us to end the protest with vague promises, but nothing has changed in four days. We fear more accidents might happen. We are determined to keep protesting.”

A third UPSC aspirant urged the government to step in: “We’ve been protesting for four days with no response. For over a decade, we’ve faced problems like harassment from brokers and landlords. The infrastructure in old Rajinder Nagar is inadequate. The government must address our concerns immediately.”

In response to the incident, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar met with 28 UPSC aspirants and promised to address their grievances. The Delhi Police have charged the coaching center owner and coordinator with culpable homicide. The MCD has also started disciplinary actions against officials of the Karol Bagh Zone. The victims, Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Kerala, were identified by DCP Central M Harshavardhan.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Delhi Chief Secretary, the Police Commissioner, and the MCD Commissioner, asking for a detailed report within two weeks. The NHRC also ordered a survey to find and take action against coaching institutes breaking the rules in Delhi. The protests are expected to continue as students remain determined in their demand for justice and reform.
