Sreeja Akula Impresses on Asian Cup Opening Day

New Delhi : India’s Sreeja Akula delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the Asian Cup Table Tennis Tournament in Shenzhen, China, securing a straight-game victory over Aia Mohamed of Qatar in her women’s singles group match yesterday. Sreeja dominated the contest, winning 3-0 and allowing her opponent to score only 16 points throughout the match.

Displaying aggressive gameplay from the start, Sreeja controlled the pace of the match with precise shots and swift movements. Her powerful forehands and well-placed smashes left Aia Mohamed struggling to respond, as the Indian paddler wrapped up the match in quick time. This win marks a strong start for Sreeja as she eyes a successful campaign in the tournament.

However, the road ahead will be challenging, as Sreeja Akula is set to face world number one Sun Yingsha of China in her second group match today. The clash against the top-ranked player will be a true test of Sreeja’s skills and resilience as she aims to continue her winning momentum.

Meanwhile, India faced setbacks in other women’s singles matches, with Ayhika Mukherjee and Yashaswini Ghodpade suffering straight-game defeats against their respective opponents. Despite their best efforts, both players were unable to match the intensity and precision of their rivals.

The men’s singles category also brought disappointment for India, as all three participants—Achanta Sharath Kamal, Manav Thakkar, and Harmeet Desai—were defeated in their opening matches. The Indian paddlers fought hard but could not secure victories against their experienced and highly-ranked opponents.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Sreeja Akula as she prepares to take on the tournament favorite Sun Yingsha. A victory in this high-stakes match would significantly boost Sreeja’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage and solidify her position as one of the rising stars of Indian table tennis.
