Gyanesh Kumar Appointed as India’s New Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi : Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), as the tenure of incumbent poll body Chief Rajiv Kumar ends today. Gyanesh Kumar, a former IAS officer from the 1988 batch of the Kerala cadre, has an extensive administrative background and has served as secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. His experience in handling legislative and policy matters is expected to strengthen the Election Commission’s role in ensuring fair and transparent elections across the country.

In addition to Gyanesh Kumar’s appointment, Dr. Vivek Joshi has been named as the new Election Commissioner. Dr. Joshi, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch of the Haryana cadre, has held several key positions in the government and brings significant expertise in governance and administration. His appointment is expected to contribute to the efficient functioning of the Election Commission, particularly in preparing for upcoming state elections and the 2024 General Elections.

The appointments were officially made by President Droupadi Murmu, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening the electoral process with experienced leadership.
