New Delhi, August 5, 2024: India issued a strong advisory for its nationals in Bangladesh on Sunday following violent clashes that resulted in at least 90 deaths, including 14 policemen. The advisory urges all Indian citizens in Bangladesh to exercise “extreme caution,” limit their movements, and avoid travel to the country until further notice.
The violence erupted as anti-government protesters clashed with security forces across Bangladesh, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The confrontations, which began with student protests over a controversial job quota scheme, have escalated into widespread anti-government demonstrations.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the advisory in light of the ongoing unrest. It advised Indian nationals to stay in contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka for safety and guidance. “All Indian nationals presently in Bangladesh are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka,” the MEA stated.
The situation in Bangladesh has been tense since last month, with protests intensifying and expanding in scope. On July 25, the MEA reported that approximately 6,700 Indian students had returned from Bangladesh due to the deteriorating conditions.
The advisory reflects the serious concerns over the safety of Indian nationals amid the escalating violence in the neighboring country.
