Chennai- A shocking aviation incident unfolded at Chennai International Airport early Sunday when a passenger allegedly opened an emergency exit and jumped off an aircraft moments after landing, prompting a temporary runway shutdown and flight disruptions.
The incident involved an Air Arabia flight arriving from Sharjah. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, had just landed and was taxiing on the runway when the passenger suddenly exited through the emergency door, causing immediate alarm among crew and airport authorities.
Officials said the main runway (07/25) was closed shortly after the incident as a precautionary measure, leading to temporary operational disruptions. During this period, flight movements were shifted to the secondary runway to maintain limited operations.
Security personnel quickly responded, and the passenger was taken into custody by local police for questioning. Authorities indicated that the individual’s mental state is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The unexpected disruption affected multiple flights, with at least five departures and arrivals delayed. An international flight operated by British Airways from London was diverted to Bengaluru due to the temporary closure.
Airport operations gradually resumed after the aircraft involved in the incident was moved from the taxiway. Officials stated that normal runway activity was restored within a short span, and the overall impact on flight schedules remained limited.
Authorities are continuing their inquiry to determine how the passenger was able to access and operate the emergency exit during taxiing, and whether additional safety measures are required to prevent such incidents in the future.
