The Impressive TimesNew Delhi, June 16, 2026: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday urged the youth of the country to draw inspiration from the Constitution of India and actively contribute towards fulfilling the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. Addressing the inaugural session of the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament 2026 at the historic Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, he said that the responsibility of shaping India’s future rests significantly on the shoulders of young citizens.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Speaking before participants from different parts of the country, Birla highlighted that the venue itself represents India’s democratic journey and serves as a reminder of the values that guide the nation.
The Lok Sabha Speaker said that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but a guiding force that reflects India’s commitment to equality, justice, and inclusive development. He encouraged young participants to understand constitutional values and apply them in public life while working towards the larger national goal of a developed India.
Highlighting the growing participation of youth in democratic initiatives, Birla noted that millions of young people have become part of the Youth Parliament programme. He described the platform as an important space for developing leadership qualities, encouraging dialogue, and strengthening democratic awareness among the next generation.
He emphasized that India’s democratic traditions are deeply rooted in its ancient civilizational practices and are not a recent development. According to him, institutions like ancient Sabhas and Samitis reflected the spirit of collective decision-making and public participation that continues to influence India’s democratic framework.
Reflecting on the journey of Indian democracy, Birla stated that the country achieved a remarkable milestone by adopting universal adult franchise from the beginning of the Republic. He pointed out that India provided equal voting rights to citizens without delay, establishing equality as a core foundation of its democratic system.
The Speaker also spoke about the increasing role of women in nation-building. He said that women today are leading transformation across various fields, including science, technology, agriculture, innovation, and national security. Their growing participation in governance and public life, he added, is strengthening the foundation of an inclusive and progressive India.
Highlighting the progress at the grassroots level, Birla noted that women’s representation in local governance has reached significant levels across several states. He described greater political participation of women as an important step towards strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring balanced representation.
He further stated that India’s youth possess the energy, creativity, and determination required to overcome future challenges. Innovation, responsibility, and a spirit of service, he said, will play a crucial role in achieving the aspirations of Viksit Bharat.
The Lok Sabha Speaker urged young leaders to view leadership not only as a position of authority but as a responsibility towards society. He stressed that effective leadership requires empathy, accountability, and a commitment to public welfare.
Birla expressed confidence that discussions and ideas emerging from the Youth Parliament would help create a generation of informed citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to the country’s progress. He said that the gathering of young minds at Samvidhan Sadan symbolized the continuation of India’s democratic legacy and the beginning of a new chapter in nation-building.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Pallavi Jain Govil, and other dignitaries were present during the programme.
