Samrat Choudhary Government to Prove Majority in Bihar Assembly on April 24

Confidence Motion Scheduled in One-Day Special Sitting Ahead of Monsoon Session

Patna: The newly installed government led by Samrat Choudhary is set to seek a vote of confidence in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on April 24, even though the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) continues to enjoy a comfortable numerical advantage.

According to Assembly officials, the upcoming sitting will be a brief, single-day session held prior to the regular monsoon session expected in July. The formal notification for convening the House has already been issued by the Assembly secretariat.

The move to seek a confidence motion comes after a leadership change at the top, replacing former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. While the alliance’s strength in the 243-member House remains intact, constitutional convention requires a newly formed government to reaffirm its majority on the floor of the House.

Officials clarified that this step aligns with the principles of collective responsibility outlined in the Constitution, ensuring that the Council of Ministers remains accountable to the legislature.

During the Assembly’s first session in December last year, the previous government did not undergo a floor test due to its overwhelming majority, with the NDA holding over 200 seats. The smooth election of the Speaker at the time had further demonstrated the alliance’s dominance.

Despite no change in numbers, the fresh leadership under Choudhary has prompted the decision to seek a mandate again—seen largely as a procedural necessity rather than a political test.

Though the outcome is unlikely to surprise given the NDA’s strength, the confidence vote will formally establish the legitimacy of the new administration. It also signals adherence to constitutional norms amid shifting leadership within the ruling alliance.
