President Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India on July 25, 2022. Before this, she served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

According to the official website of the President of India, she has devoted her life to empowering marginalised communities and deepening democratic values.

Born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, she hails from a Santhali tribal family. Her early years were marked by struggle and hardship. Despite this, she pursued education with determination.

After completing her primary education in her village, she moved to Bhubaneswar to continue her studies. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramadevi Women’s College and became the first woman from her village to graduate.

From 1979 to 1983, she worked as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation and Power Department of Odisha. Between 1994 and 1997, she volunteered as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur.

In 2000, she entered politics and was elected as an MLA from the Rairangpur constituency. She held the seat for two consecutive terms until 2009.

During her tenure as an MLA, she served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) in two key departments: Commerce and Transport (2000–2002) and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (2002–2004). In these roles, she introduced people-centric and innovative initiatives.

She also served on various committees in the Odisha Legislative Assembly and chaired several of them. Her dedication earned her the prestigious Pandit Nilkanth Das – Best Legislator Award in 2007.

In 2015, she was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand, becoming the first tribal woman to serve in that role in a tribal-majority state. Her efforts to protect tribal rights and uphold constitutional values won her widespread respect.

She initiated reforms in the recruitment and examination processes of State Universities. Her non-partisan approach and commitment to democratic principles earned admiration across political lines.
