Delhi Deserves a Government That Truly Serves Its People: Sitharaman

New Delhi, Feb 8, 2025: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) inches closer to a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for a government that prioritizes the welfare of the people in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Speaking at a post-Budget media briefing alongside the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Sitharaman highlighted the importance of Delhi’s governance aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a Viksit Bharat 2047. She stressed that the national capital should have a government committed to holistic development and public welfare.

“Under PM Modi’s leadership, we are very keen that Delhi gets a government which serves its people. This is the need of the hour for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047,” Sitharaman stated.

She further elaborated on the necessity of a development-oriented approach in governance, encompassing human development, infrastructure growth, and social sector advancements. “Delhi must be at the forefront of national progress. A government that prioritizes its people is crucial—whether in education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” she added.

With the BJP leading in 48 out of 70 seats and the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead in 22, the saffron party looks set to form the government in Delhi for the first time in nearly 27 years. The Congress, once a dominant force in the capital, has failed to secure a single lead, marking its third consecutive electoral setback in Delhi.

The BJP’s anticipated victory signals a major political shift in the capital, which has been under AAP’s rule for the last decade. Political analysts suggest that public sentiment favored a change in governance, with voters seeking a more robust leadership that delivers on infrastructure, governance reforms, and quality-of-life improvements.

Sitharaman’s remarks underline the BJP’s commitment to transforming Delhi into a model city, aligning with national aspirations for comprehensive growth. The final election results are awaited, but the trends indicate a significant political realignment in the capital.
