Srinagar, July 22: A Jammu and KashmirPolice head constable was killed after terrorists opened fire in Anantnag district on Wednesday, marking the first terrorist attack in the Union Territory since the deadly Pahalgam massacre that claimed 26 civilian lives in April 2025.
The attack took place around 12:30 pm near Lal Chowk in Anantnag, where Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi was deployed as part of the security arrangements for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
According to officials, Qureshi, a member of the IR 3rd Battalion and a resident of Beerwah in Budgam district, sustained critical injuries in the firing. He was immediately shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the attack, security forces sealed the area and launched an intensive search operation to trace the terrorists involved. Additional security personnel have been deployed, and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident is the first major terror strike reported in Jammu and Kashmir since the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians lost their lives, raising fresh concerns over the security situation in the region.
Condemning the killing, CPI(M) Central Committee member and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami described the attack as a heinous act of violence. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said such incidents must be condemned unequivocally, calling for peace and stability in the region.
The latest attack comes amid heightened security arrangements for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, with security agencies maintaining a high alert across Jammu and Kashmir.
