EAM Jaishankar meets Singaporean, Brazilian leaders in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, Feb 20 ,2025 :External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in significant discussions with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan and Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) in Johannesburg today. The meetings focused on strengthening bilateral relationships, addressing global challenges, and reinforcing multilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar took to social media platform X to share insights from his interactions. He remarked, “Always a meaningful conversation with FM @VivianBala of Singapore, this time in Johannesburg during the G20 FMM. Discussed global affairs and explored avenues to further our bilateral partnership.” The dialogue with Singapore’s Foreign Minister underscored the deep and dynamic ties between the two nations, emphasizing mutual interests in regional stability and economic collaboration.

In another post, Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with the meeting with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, highlighting their discussions on bilateral cooperation, global developments, and collaborative efforts within the G20 framework. He noted, “Pleased to meet FM Mauro Vieira of Brazil today in Johannesburg. Talked about strengthening bilateral ties, global challenges, our G20 efforts, and Brazil’s leadership of BRICS.” Their exchange touched on Brazil’s upcoming BRICS Presidency and how both countries could work together to advance shared priorities on the international stage.

Jaishankar’s two-day visit to Johannesburg, spanning from February 20-21, is at the invitation of Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting provides a critical platform for addressing pressing global issues and fostering cooperation among the world’s largest economies.

According to an official statement, Jaishankar’s participation aims to deepen India’s engagement with G20 nations and amplify the voice of the Global South in this influential forum. As a champion of developing countries, India’s proactive involvement in the G20 is seen as pivotal to ensuring more inclusive and equitable global governance.

In addition to the G20 proceedings, Jaishankar is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the margins of the FMM, providing opportunities to strengthen diplomatic ties and discuss shared priorities with other participating nations. His engagements in Johannesburg reflect India’s commitment to constructive international diplomacy and its dedication to addressing global challenges through dialogue and cooperation.
