New Delhi, August 17, 2026; The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a demonstration in Delhi on Monday, protesting against the National Testing Agency (NTA) over alleged lapses in the June 2026 UGC-NET examination. The protest later witnessed a confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel.
The demonstration followed the NTA’s decision to conduct fresh examinations for English, Commerce and Sociology after receiving complaints about errors in the question papers. The agency said an expert committee was constituted to examine the complaints and recommended re-examinations to ensure a fair and error-free assessment.
NSUI criticised the delay in addressing the reported discrepancies and demanded that responsibility be fixed on officials overseeing the examination process. The student organisation also questioned why candidates should have to appear for another examination because of mistakes attributed to the testing agency.
The June 2026 UGC-NET examination was conducted from June 22 to 30 across 87 subjects. The test is used to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor positions, besides serving as an entrance route for PhD programmes.
Following complaints, the NTA’s review committee identified several issues in the affected papers. These reportedly included factual and typographical mistakes, translation-related problems, errors in question wording, grammatical inconsistencies and repeated questions from earlier examinations.
Under the revised schedule, candidates appearing for English will take the re-examination on September 9 from 9 am to noon. The Commerce paper is scheduled for the same day from 3 pm to 6 pm, while Sociology candidates will appear on September 10 from 9 am to noon.
NSUI has maintained that students should not bear the consequences of examination-related shortcomings and has called for greater accountability and transparency in the functioning of the NTA.
