New Delhi, Aug. 1, 2026; Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal on Saturday inspected the Bhalswa Dumpsite to review the progress of legacy waste remediation being carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The visit highlighted the Centre’s continued emphasis on the timely clearance of legacy waste and scientific management of municipal solid waste.
The inspection was attended by the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Department of Urban Development.
During the review, MCD officials informed the Minister that 99.07 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste had been remediated at the Bhalswa dumpsite till July 31, 2026. The remaining legacy waste is expected to be cleared by October 15, 2026, while waste accumulated up to March 2026 is targeted to be processed by December 31, 2026.
Manohar Lal directed the MCD to expedite the newly awarded work for processing fresh waste reaching the sanitary landfill so that remediation efforts can progress faster while ensuring scientific disposal of incoming waste.
The Minister stressed that prompt processing of fresh waste is essential to prevent further accumulation at the landfill and to achieve the goal of complete remediation within the stipulated timeline.
The visit reflects the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ continued focus on the time-bound elimination of legacy waste and the transformation of the Bhalswa dumpsite through scientific waste management practices.
