CEA Hosts Nationwide Electrical Safety Awareness Programme on Electrical Safety Day

NEW DELHI: The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in collaboration with BSES, organised Electrical Safety Day 2026 in the national capital on June 29, 2026, bringing together key stakeholders from across India’s power and safety ecosystem to raise awareness about preventing electrical accidents and fire hazards.

This year’s theme, “Today’s Awareness, Tomorrow’s Prevention: Let Us All Unite to Prevent Fire Hazards from Electrical Short Circuits,” underscored the importance of proactive awareness in avoiding preventable electrical disasters. The theme highlighted that most electrical fires originate from issues such as faulty wiring, overloaded sockets, and substandard equipment—risks that can be mitigated through informed action and regular safety checks.

Officials emphasised that safety begins with awareness at the household and institutional levels. By educating citizens, communities, and organisations about electrical risks, authorities aim to build a culture of prevention rather than reaction. Electrical Safety Day 2026 was positioned as a nationwide platform to strengthen this awareness and ensure safer living and working environments.

The event was graced by Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA, along with senior dignitaries including Shri Sunil Kumar Jha, Directorate General – Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards, Ministry of Home Affairs. Members of the CEA board, including Shri A. Balan (Member, Planning), Shri Praveen Gupta (Member, Thermal and E&C), Shri Hemant Jain (Member, GO&D), and Shri V.K. Singh (Member, Power System), also attended the programme. Shri Amal Sinha, Director and Group CEO of BSES, was also present.

The event saw participation from over 1,300 delegates representing various sectors including power utilities, regulatory authorities, State Chief Electrical Inspectorates, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), OEMs, manufacturers, hospitals, educational institutions, hotels, and energy consumers. In addition, thousands of viewers joined virtually through a live webcast, significantly expanding the outreach of the programme.

Addressing the gathering through a video message, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal stressed that electrical safety is a crucial pillar in India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He urged citizens and institutions to integrate safety practices into daily life, emphasising that most electrical fires caused by short circuits are preventable with routine inspections, proper earthing, preventive maintenance, and adherence to safety standards.

The Minister also encouraged RWAs, industries, hospitals, commercial establishments, and infrastructure agencies to adopt stronger electrical safety protocols and foster a culture of vigilance and responsibility. He welcomed the launch of “Vidyut Suraksha Bodh,” an electricity safety handbook for children, and the Electrical Fire Safety Book, calling them important steps toward building awareness among the younger generation.

Speakers at the event reiterated that India’s rapidly expanding energy infrastructure must be matched with equal emphasis on safety standards and public awareness. They noted that technological advancement alone is not sufficient unless supported by informed users who understand basic safety protocols.

The programme concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen nationwide electrical safety awareness, reduce fire-related incidents, and ensure safer communities through sustained education, collaboration, and preventive action.
