NIXI Celebrates 23rd Foundation Day, Showcasing India’s Internet Revolution

NIXI marks 23 years of strengthening India’s internet infrastructure with new digital security and innovation initiatives.

NEW DELHI, 18 JUNE 2026: The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) will celebrate its 23rd Foundation Day on June 19, 2026, marking more than two decades of contributions towards strengthening India’s internet infrastructure and supporting the country’s digital transformation journey.

The event will be attended by S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Chairman of NIXI, as the Chief Guest. Senior government officials, industry leaders, academicians and members of the internet community are also expected to participate in the celebrations.

Established under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), NIXI has played a crucial role in developing and managing India’s internet ecosystem. The organisation is responsible for managing the country’s “.IN” domain, facilitating Internet Exchange services and allocating Internet Protocol (IP) resources through the Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN).

A key highlight of this year’s Foundation Day will be the launch of an AI-powered WHOIS Screening Platform, designed to strengthen the security and trustworthiness of India’s “.IN” domain ecosystem. The initiative is expected to enhance transparency, improve monitoring capabilities and support safer digital interactions for users and businesses.

Over the years, NIXI has emerged as a vital pillar of India’s digital infrastructure. The organisation currently manages more than 3.9 million “.IN” domain names, placing India among the top ten country-code domain registries in the world. It has also played a significant role in promoting secure digital practices by facilitating the migration of banking platforms to the “.bank.in” domain space, helping improve online security and consumer trust.

NIXI has been actively driving the adoption of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) across the country. India’s IPv6 penetration has now reached approximately 78.34 per cent, making it one of the leading nations in the adoption of next-generation internet technology and helping prepare the country’s digital infrastructure for future demands.

The organisation currently operates 79 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across India, ensuring faster and more efficient internet traffic exchange. It also supports domain registrations in 22 Indian languages, promoting digital inclusion and enabling citizens to access internet services in their preferred languages.

As part of the Foundation Day celebrations, NIXI will unveil several new initiatives focused on improving service delivery, automation and domain security. The event will also honour partners and stakeholders who have contributed significantly to the growth of India’s internet ecosystem.

As India moves towards becoming a digitally empowered society and knowledge-driven economy, NIXI continues to play a crucial role in strengthening internet resilience, promoting the adoption of “.IN” and “.भारत” domains, and building a secure, inclusive and future-ready digital ecosystem for the nation.
