US Tourist Assault Case Triggers Licence Cancellation of Kodagu Homestay

Kodagu- The administration in Kodagu has revoked the operating licence of a homestay in Kutta village following a complaint of sexual assault filed by a United States tourist, officials confirmed.

The action was taken after an incident reported earlier this month at a property identified as Devi Villa in the Kutta area of Ponnampet taluk. Authorities said the decision to cancel the licence was based on police recommendations and the seriousness of the allegations.

According to Karnataka Police, a case has been registered against a staff member, who has been identified as the primary accused, as well as the owner of the homestay. Both individuals have been arrested and presented before a court, which has remanded them to judicial custody as the investigation continues.

Officials are examining multiple aspects of the case, including whether there were attempts to conceal the incident and if any substances were used to incapacitate the complainant. Investigators are also looking into communication restrictions at the property following the alleged assault.

District authorities stated that the cancellation of the licence is part of a broader push to ensure compliance among homestay operators. Vijay Kumar, who also heads the District Tourism Development Committee, emphasised that strict measures will be enforced in cases involving safety violations.

Superintendent of Police RK Bindu Mani said that all station house officers have been instructed to carry out regular inspections of homestays and submit compliance reports. Monthly review meetings with operators are also being introduced to strengthen oversight.

Officials highlighted that while thousands of homestays are registered in the district, a significant number continue to function without proper authorisation. Authorities have indicated that such establishments will face action in the coming weeks.

State Home Minister G Parameshwara said police responded swiftly after receiving information about the case and assured that further legal action would follow based on the findings. He also stressed that adherence to licensing norms and safety protocols is essential, particularly in regions that attract international tourists.

The case has drawn attention to regulatory gaps in the homestay sector and prompted authorities to tighten monitoring mechanisms across the district.
