Delhi High Court to Hear Urgent Plea on Security in Uttam Nagar Amid Rising Tensions

Petition flags alleged threats ahead of Eid and seeks immediate police action to prevent possible unrest following recent violence in the area

New Delhi, March 18: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday agreed to urgently hear a petition seeking enhanced security measures in Uttam Nagar, amid concerns over possible disturbances in the lead-up to Eid.

The plea has been filed by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, which has urged the court to direct the Delhi Police to increase patrolling and ensure adequate deployment in the locality. The demand comes after heightened anxiety among members of the Muslim community following the killing of a 26-year-old man during Holi celebrations earlier this month.

Senior advocate Nitya Ramakrishna mentioned the matter before a bench led by Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, pressing for immediate hearing. She pointed to alleged threatening messages circulating on social media, warning of potential violence around the upcoming festival.

According to the petitioner, prior representations were made to the police but did not result in any concrete preventive action. The plea highlights fears that tensions could escalate during Eid, which is expected later this week.

Taking note of the submissions, the court agreed to list the matter for hearing later in the day.

The present situation stems from a dispute that began on March 4, when a water balloon thrown by a child reportedly struck a woman, leading to a confrontation between two families. The clash escalated, leaving several injured, and a 26-year-old man later died from his injuries, intensifying tensions in the area.
