New Delhi, March 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of development projects valued at around ₹33,500 crore in the national capital, aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure, improving connectivity and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the initiatives mark a major step toward building a modern and developed Delhi. According to him, the projects cover several sectors including the expansion of the Delhi Metro network and the construction of modern residential complexes for thousands of government employees.
He stated that strengthening infrastructure in the capital is vital because the growth of Delhi reflects the progress and global image of the entire country. Modi noted that the newly inaugurated metro section will significantly ease daily travel for large numbers of commuters, particularly residents of East and North-East Delhi.
Highlighting public transport improvements, the Prime Minister said thousands of electric buses have already been deployed in the city with support from the central government. He added that several new buses, including specially designed “Devi Buses,” have been introduced to improve last-mile connectivity across neighbourhoods.
The Prime Minister also spoke about ongoing efforts to address environmental and traffic challenges in the capital. He said projects aimed at cleaning the Yamuna River are being implemented, while infrastructure initiatives such as the Eastern Peripheral Expressway have helped divert large volumes of traffic away from the city.
During the programme, Modi mentioned that new residential complexes for government employees were inaugurated in Sarojini Nagar, providing modern housing facilities for thousands of officials working in different departments.
The Prime Minister also highlighted welfare initiatives aimed at supporting small businesses. Under the PM SVANidhi Yojana, nearly two lakh street vendors in Delhi have received financial assistance exceeding ₹350 crore. He said the government has also begun issuing SVANidhi credit cards to vendors, enabling them to access formal financial services and support their livelihoods.
Marking International Women’s Day, the Prime Minister praised the growing role of women in sectors such as governance, science, sports and entrepreneurship. He noted that women’s self-help groups have empowered millions financially and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding the initiative that aims to create “Lakhpati Didis” across the country.
The Prime Minister concluded by saying that Delhi is witnessing a period of rapid transformation and urged citizens to work together to realise the vision of a developed India in the coming decades.
