Rajya Sabha Adjourned Till 2 PM Amid Deadlock Over Bihar Voter List Revision

Opposition Demands Debate on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) Issue

New Delhi- The Rajya Sabha witnessed another day of disruption as a standoff between the ruling party and the Opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s voter list continued. The deadlock forced the Deputy Chairman to adjourn proceedings until 2 PM.

Opposition members demanded a discussion on the voter list issue, creating significant uproar in the House. The persistent disagreement has repeatedly hampered legislative work during the session’s final week, affecting the passage of bills and other parliamentary business. While the Opposition called for a debate, the ruling party declined, citing constitutional guidelines.

In the morning session, Deputy Chairman Harivansh informed the House that he had received 20 notices under Rule 267 for discussions on four subjects. He clarified that the notices did not comply with parliamentary rules and could not be accepted. This announcement led to protests from Opposition members, who moved toward the Chair while raising slogans.

During Zero Hour, BJP member Kanad Purkayastha was called upon to raise his issue, but the Opposition continued its protest. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge urged clarity on the requirements for submitting notices under Rule 267, emphasizing that members should be informed to ensure proper compliance.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh appealed to members to maintain order, reminding them of the importance of Zero Hour and Question Hour for addressing national issues. He also pointed out that some members were wearing badges inside the House, which was against protocol.

Due to the ongoing disorder and inability to conduct proceedings smoothly, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House until 2 PM.
