Big Blow to Nitish Kumar’s JDU :Bihar gets Denied “Special Category Status” By Centre

New Delhi, July 22 2024 : The Centre has rejected Bihar’s plea for special category status, citing criteria laid down by the National Development Council (NDC) for such considerations. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary clarified the decision on Monday, asserting that Bihar’s case did not meet the required parameters as assessed by an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) in its report submitted on March 30, 2012.

The demand for special category status for Bihar was raised prominently during an all-party meeting, where both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition bloc voiced their support. Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party leaders within the NDA, including Sanjay Kumar Jha and Union minister Chirag Paswan, advocated for the status. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also joined in pressing for the demand.

In response to the Centre’s decision, JD(U), a key constituent of the NDA, reiterated its stance, suggesting that a special financial package could be an alternative solution if special status is unattainable.

Earlier this month, the NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24 highlighted Bihar’s performance, ranking it at the bottom despite marginal improvements on certain parameters. The index evaluates state-wise progress across 16 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing an overall assessment of each state and Union Territory’s development trajectory.

The denial of special category status has sparked reactions from political circles, with Bihar’s leaders emphasizing the need for tailored developmental strategies to address the state’s challenges.
