Supreme Court Directs Haryana to Remove Highway Blockade at Shambhu Border

New Delhi, July 12 : The Supreme Court has intervened in the ongoing dispute over the blockade of the Ambala-New Delhi national highway at the Shambhu border by directing the Haryana government to immediately remove barricades set up since February. The court questioned the state’s authority to block a highway meant for regulating traffic, emphasizing the need to balance public safety with the rights of farmers protesting there.

The directive came during a hearing after the Haryana government indicated its intention to challenge a recent High Court order mandating the reopening of the highway within seven days. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan expressed concern over the state’s decision to contest the order, highlighting the citizens’ right to protest peacefully and the state’s obligation to ensure their welfare.

Justice Kant underscored the importance of providing basic amenities to protesters and suggested that blocking highways isn’t conducive to resolving issues peacefully. The court also sought an affidavit from the state detailing developments since the High Court’s ruling.

The case originated from clashes earlier this year that resulted in the death of farmer Shubhkaran Singh, prompting the High Court to order investigations into the incident. It reiterated the need for maintaining law and order while allowing peaceful demonstrations without hindering public access to essential routes.

The Supreme Court’s intervention marks a critical step towards resolving the standoff at the Shambhu border, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach in handling public protests and maintaining public safety.
