Kozhikode, June 11: Health authorities in Kerala have intensified surveillance measures after a 43-year-old man from Feroke in Kozhikode showed signs of a possible Nipah virus infection. Officials are awaiting confirmatory test results from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.
The patient, who is being treated at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kozhikode, reportedly developed symptoms associated with encephalitis. Preliminary testing conducted at the hospital indicated a positive result for Nipah virus, prompting immediate precautionary measures.
Hospital officials said the patient remains in critical condition and is currently receiving ventilator support. He was initially admitted to a private healthcare facility before being transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital late Wednesday night.
An isolation unit has been established at the hospital to ensure strict infection-control protocols while medical teams continue treatment and monitoring.
In response to the suspected case, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan scheduled a high-level review meeting involving senior health officials, including representatives from the Directorate of Health Services and the Directorate of Medical Education.
The minister indicated that the patient’s symptoms are consistent with a possible Nipah infection. However, final confirmation will depend on laboratory analysis being conducted by the National Institute of Virology.
Health authorities have launched an extensive contact-tracing exercise to identify individuals who may have interacted with the patient before his hospitalization.
According to officials, the man visited multiple healthcare facilities for consultations and diagnostic procedures. As a precaution, healthcare workers and other individuals who may have come into contact with him are being advised to follow quarantine protocols.
A detailed route map is also being prepared to help officials track potential exposure points and prevent further transmission.
Authorities are investigating the source of the infection. Preliminary inquiries suggest the patient had recently cleaned a rented storage facility where fruit bats may have been present.
Fruit bats are recognized as the natural reservoir of the Nipah virus. Health officials are examining whether exposure to bat-contaminated surroundings could have contributed to the suspected infection.
The minister noted that the patient had earlier recovered from a fever but later developed more serious health complications, leading to hospitalization.
Kozhikode has faced multiple Nipah-related incidents in recent years, including outbreaks in 2018 and 2023, as well as an isolated spillover case in 2021.
Given the district’s history with the virus, authorities have activated enhanced surveillance and emergency response systems while awaiting final test results.
Health officials have urged the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as investigations continue.
