The Impressive TimesMuscat/New Delhi, June 11: Concerns over the safety of Indian seafarers have intensified after another merchant vessel carrying Indian crew members reported an incident near the coast of Oman on Thursday. The development marks the third such maritime episode involving ships with Indian personnel in less than a week.
The vessel, MV Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged asphalt tanker, was reportedly involved in an incident near Shinas Port in Oman. Initial reports indicated that around 20 Indian sailors were onboard at the time.
The Embassy of India in Oman said it is in contact with local authorities and is closely tracking developments.
In a statement shared on social media, the embassy confirmed that it had received information regarding the incident and was coordinating with relevant agencies to gather further details and ensure the welfare of crew members.
According to an alert issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel experienced a fire in its engine room approximately 21 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, Oman.
Authorities said no environmental damage had been reported and investigations into the cause of the fire were continuing. Emergency response agencies are assessing the situation while monitoring the vessel’s condition.
The latest incident comes shortly after a series of attacks involving commercial ships operating in regional waters.
Industry representatives confirmed that MV Jalveer was among several vessels affected by heightened security concerns in the Gulf of Oman. Shipping sector sources said the tanker was reportedly anchored when the incident occurred.
The development follows the recent attack on tanker Settebello, in which three Indian seafarers lost their lives. Earlier this week, another vessel, Marivex, was also reportedly targeted near the Oman coast.
Following the deaths aboard Settebello, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased sailors.
He stated that the government remains committed to supporting affected crew members and ensuring the safe return of Indian nationals working in international waters. Authorities have also been directed to facilitate repatriation efforts where necessary.
The incidents have occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia. The fragile ceasefire situation in the region has deteriorated, leading to increased military activity and heightened risks for commercial shipping routes.
Security analysts warn that continued instability around the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz could pose challenges for global maritime trade, particularly for vessels carrying multinational crews.
Officials are expected to provide further updates on MV Jalveer as investigations continue and more information becomes available.
