Five Killed in Fatal Highway Crash in UP’s Mau After SUV Hits Truck

Family returning from wedding among victims as police cite driver fatigue in early morning accident

Mau- At least five people lost their lives in a devastating road accident in Mau after an SUV rammed into a truck on the GorakhpurVaranasi four-lane highway in the early hours of Saturday, police officials confirmed.

According to initial findings, the SUV first struck a road divider near Kusumha Basharatpur before swerving into the opposite lane and crashing head-on into a trailer. The collision was so intense that the front portion of the vehicle was completely crushed, leaving all occupants trapped inside.

The victims have been identified as Vinay Srivastava (60), his wife Archana Srivastava (58), their son Kritarth Srivastava (27), and two drivers, Purushottam (47) and Nitish (46). The family was returning to Gorakhpur after attending a wedding in Ranchi.

Police suspect that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the loss of control that caused the crash. Emergency teams, along with forensic personnel, took nearly two and a half hours to cut open the mangled SUV and retrieve the bodies.

Officials from the local police, including Circle Officer Jitendra Singh, stated that the bodies were sent to the district hospital for postmortem examination, and the victims’ families have been informed.

Both vehicles involved in the accident have since been cleared from the highway, and traffic movement has returned to normal. Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the exact sequence of events.
