Bangalore: Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) in Bengaluru has received four cheetahs from South Africa under an approved animal exchange programme aimed at strengthening conservation efforts and enhancing genetic diversity within captive populations.
The four animals, including two females, arrived at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of Saturday from Induna Primate and Parrot Park in South Africa. Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre received the animals at the airport and directed officials to ensure strict quarantine protocols, specialised dietary care and close health monitoring during the mandatory 30-day acclimatisation period.
Officials said the import forms part of a broader initiative focused on wildlife conservation, scientific research, environmental education and international collaboration in animal management. Authorities stated the cheetahs had undergone required health checks and quarantine procedures in South Africa before transportation, while all necessary import clearances and No Objection Certificates were secured in compliance with animal quarantine regulations.
Upon arrival at Bannerghatta Biological Park, the cheetahs were moved to a designated quarantine facility for post-import observation and health assessments. Following the quarantine period, the animals are expected to be shifted to their enclosures and made accessible for public viewing.
The minister also emphasised the significance of the arrival from a conservation awareness perspective, noting that cheetahs, once locally referred to as “Sivangi,” have long disappeared from Karnataka’s forests. Officials said the addition of the animals strengthens the park’s ex-situ conservation role while supporting visitor awareness and long-term scientific management programmes.
