Delhi High Court to Issue Interim Protection of Shashi Tharoor’s Personality Rights Over Deepfake Content

Court steps in after Congress leader seeks urgent removal of digitally manipulated videos circulating online

New Delhi, May 8, 2026: The Delhi High Court on Friday indicated that it will soon pass an interim order aimed at protecting the personality rights of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor after he approached the court over the circulation of deepfake videos misrepresenting him on digital platforms.

Tharoor has sought urgent judicial intervention, stating that several manipulated videos are being shared online which falsely attribute statements and views to him that he has never made. The petition highlights concerns over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence tools to create misleading and reputationally damaging content.

Taking note of the submissions, the court observed the need for immediate safeguards in such cases and signalled that an interim order would be issued to address the alleged violation of his personality and publicity rights.

The matter reflects the increasing legal scrutiny surrounding deepfake technology and its potential misuse in spreading misinformation and harming public figures’ reputations. Courts in India have recently been considering stronger protective measures as digital impersonation cases continue to rise.

Further proceedings in the case are expected as the court examines the extent of online circulation and the responsibility of platforms hosting such content.
