New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his death anniversary. Taking to social media, PM Modi expressed his respects for the late leader, acknowledging his contributions to India’s freedom struggle and the formative years of independent India.
“Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary,” the Prime Minister wrote in a brief post on X (formerly Twitter), joining leaders from across the political spectrum in remembering Nehru’s legacy.
Pandit Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, was a central figure in Indian politics both before and after independence. He served as the Prime Minister of India from 1947 until his death on May 27, 1964. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and later became a key architect of modern India, promoting industrialization, scientific temper, secularism, and democratic values.
Often referred to as “Chacha Nehru” for his affection towards children, his birth anniversary is celebrated as Children’s Day in India. On his death anniversary, political leaders, scholars, and citizens remember his vision for a progressive India and his commitment to nation-building.
As is customary, tributes were also paid at Shanti Van, Nehru’s memorial on the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, and other senior leaders were present to offer floral tributes. The Congress party also shared messages and archival photographs of Nehru on social media, celebrating his legacy and recalling his contributions to shaping modern India.
PM Modi’s acknowledgment of Nehru’s death anniversary reflects the longstanding democratic tradition in India of honoring past leaders, regardless of current political affiliations. Despite ideological differences between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, such moments of tribute serve as reminders of the contributions made by foundational figures in India’s journey as a nation.
Nehru’s policies and legacy continue to evoke debate and reflection in contemporary India, but his role as a freedom fighter and the country’s first Prime Minister remains uncontested in the annals of Indian history.
