Punjab, Rajasthan on High Alert After Operation Sindoor: Schools Shut, Leaves Cancelled!

CHANDIGARH, May 8: Following India’s precision missile strikes on nine terror targets across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the states of Punjab and Rajasthan, which share extensive borders with Pakistan, have gone on high alert.

The Indian military’s Operation Sindoor, carried out late Tuesday night, was aimed at dismantling key terror infrastructure responsible for planning and executing the Pahalgam attack that killed several civilians and security personnel. With tensions escalating, state governments in Punjab and Rajasthan have ramped up security measures along the international border to ensure civilian safety and maintain law and order.

Punjab, which shares a 532-km long border with Pakistan, has taken swift and decisive action. According to senior officials, the Punjab Police has cancelled all leaves of its personnel, ensuring maximum deployment of forces in sensitive and border areas. The state government has also ordered the immediate closure of schools across six border districts as a precautionary measure. “The safety of students and civilians is our top priority,” a government spokesperson said, adding that additional paramilitary units have been stationed along key border posts. Police and local administration teams are also conducting regular checks and monitoring public spaces to prevent any untoward incidents.

In Rajasthan, where the international border stretches over 1,070 km, similar heightened security measures have been put in place. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma chaired a high-level meeting with senior police and intelligence officials to assess the situation. According to sources, desert patrol units and the Border Security Force (BSF) have been reinforced in Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, and Sriganganagar districts, with special instructions to monitor border infiltration attempts and suspicious activities. “All district authorities have been directed to stay vigilant, and quick response teams are on standby to deal with emergencies,” a senior Rajasthan police officer confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs is in constant touch with both state governments, coordinating intelligence-sharing and emergency preparedness. Defense analysts suggest that while the strikes were surgical and focused on terror hubs, the risk of retaliatory actions or proxy attacks cannot be ruled out.

With the situation evolving, both Punjab and Rajasthan governments have urged the public to remain calm but alert, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to local authorities. Further security reviews are expected over the coming days as the region braces for potential fallout.
