Ambati Rayudu: “MS Dhoni Already Planning to Build a Strong CSK Team for Next Year”

NEW DELHI, 26 APRIL 2025: Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has weighed in on Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) underwhelming performance in the ongoing IPL season, suggesting that MS Dhoni is already thinking about building a stronger team for next year.

Speaking on Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, Rayudu said, “It’s the lowest of lows, but also a great learning curve for CSK. If you rest on your laurels and don’t keep an eye on the future, this is what can happen. Even MS Dhoni has acknowledged that the game has moved on. I’m sure he’s already thinking about building a team for next year.”

Rayudu pointed out positives like the emergence of young talents Dewald Brevis and Sameer Rizvi (Mhatre), calling them “shining lights” in CSK’s lineup. He noted that such a difficult season can often serve to ground a team and bring them back to basics.

Highlighting issues in the batting department, Rayudu said, “I don’t think there’s confusion in shot selection—rather, there aren’t enough shots being played. Batters are taking more time than they should. These personnel changes look like a trial run for next season.”

He also hinted at a potential squad overhaul, suggesting that only 7-8 players from the current roster might be retained going forward.

Meanwhile, CSK’s struggles continued as they suffered another loss, this time to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday in Chennai. SRH pacer Harshal Patel was the standout performer in the match. With this defeat, CSK now sits at the bottom of the table with just two wins and seven losses from nine matches. SRH, with three wins, has moved to the eighth spot.

CSK’s next match is against Punjab Kings on April 30 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
