Sonipat, 5 March,2025: Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, Vice Chancellor, Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST), Murthal said that in a significant scientific achievement, the Department of Chemistry has developed a revolutionary formula that will help in increasing the life of mild steel and protect it from corrosion for a longer period. He said that this innovation will drastically reduce the maintenance cost of iron and improve the strength and durability of bridges, buildings and equipment made of mild steel. This innovative formula has been officially recognized by the Indian Patent Office, thereby strengthening its credibility and impact in the industrial sector. This economical and easy to use formula is the result of hard work of dedicated researchers of the Department of Chemistry, DCRUST for the last one year.
Success after years of hard work
The team from the Department of Chemistry had long been looking for a solution that could specifically protect mild steel from rusting – a challenge faced by industries across the world. After several experiments and trials, the researchers finally developed a formula that combines oil, halide ions and surfactants in a precise proportion. This mixture forms a protective layer on the surface of mild steel, preventing it from rusting even when exposed to air, water and moisture.
Another unique feature of this invention is that the formula can keep mild steel safe for two to three days, not only in normal atmosphere but also in mildly acidic conditions – this is a major achievement for a material used in industrial environments.
Useful in many industries
Mild steel is used extensively in the construction of bridges, railway tracks, building structures, boilers and heavy machinery. However, corrosion significantly reduces the life of these structures and equipment, requiring costly maintenance and repairs. This new formula can significantly increase the life of mild steel, reducing costs and improving the safety of infrastructure.
Significant support from the university administration
Dr. Preeti Pahuja Satija, Prof. Suman Lata and Dr. Sumit Kumar, who played a key role in this research work, attributed their success to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, who provided all the necessary resources and facilities to the department from time to time. This research team was led by Dr. Preeti Pahuja Satija, who worked under the guidance of Prof. Suman Lata and Dr. Sumit Kumar. The patent for this innovation was first published on 7 August 2020 and after detailed investigation and evaluation, it was officially approved by the Indian Patent Office on 27 February 2025. This patent certifies the novelty, industrial utility and technical significance of this invention.
The researchers expressed their gratitude to the university administration and said that this innovation reflects DCRUST’s excellence in scientific research and will also directly contribute to industrial innovation and economic savings of the country.
Economical and easy use
The biggest feature of this formula is its affordable price and ease of use. It can be applied directly on the mild steel surface, where it forms a strong protective layer. It does not require any special equipment or expensive machinery for application, so even small and medium scale industries can easily adopt this technology.
Major achievement in ‘Make in India’ initiative
This innovation is also a significant milestone for the ‘Make in India’ campaign, demonstrating how indigenous research can deliver world-class solutions. In the future, when this formula is commercially produced, it can become a standard anti-corrosion measure in many industries, saving crores of rupees for the country and making structures more safe and durable.
Science and technology educational institutions can play an important role in making the country self-reliant: Vice Chancellor Prof. Singh
Vice Chancellor Prof. Shri Prakash Singh said that this historic research of DCRUST once again proves how scientific research can advance technological progress and economic development. With patents and research publications, the university is continuously contributing to the country’s technological self-reliance and industrial innovation. He said that science and technology will play an important role in making the country developed. Science and technology educational institutions can play an important role in making the country self-reliant.
