SKM Protest: Punjab Police Blocks Farmers’ March to Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH, 05 March 2025: Farmers under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) faced roadblocks as they attempted to march towards Chandigarh for their week-long protest starting Wednesday. The demonstration aims to push for their various demands, but Punjab Police have set up multiple barricades and checkpoints across the state, reinforcing security at all entry points to the Union Territory.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an alliance of over 30 farmer organizations, had announced the protest to begin on March 5, urging authorities to address their grievances. However, law enforcement agencies have intensified restrictions, preventing farmers from entering Chandigarh.

Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General H. S. Bhullar affirmed that strict measures were in place to halt the protesters. “The farmers will not be allowed to reach Chandigarh under any circumstances,” he stated, underscoring the administration’s firm stance on maintaining order.

The situation remains tense as farmers and authorities stand at odds over the protest. Despite the heavy deployment of security personnel, farmer leaders have expressed their determination to press forward with their agitation.

The SKM has been at the forefront of major farmer protests in recent years, advocating for issues such as minimum support price (MSP) guarantees, loan waivers, and other agrarian concerns. Their latest demonstration seeks to bring renewed attention to these demands.

As police continue to block access to the city, it remains to be seen how the standoff unfolds in the coming days. The farmers have vowed to persist in their struggle, while the administration remains steadfast in its efforts to prevent any disruption in Chandigarh.
