Delhi Mayor Orders Crackdown on Illegal Coaching Centres

New Delhi, July 28, 2024: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has directed a comprehensive crackdown on coaching centers operating illegally from basements. This decision follows the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants who drowned in a flooded basement in Old Rajinder Nagar.

Mayor Oberoi has instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. She emphasized that any MCD officers found negligent should face strict consequences.

In a detailed letter to the MCD Commissioner, Oberoi expressed her shock and dismay over the incident. “The loss of these young lives is heartbreaking and demands a full investigation to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence,” she wrote. She highlighted the urgency of addressing safety standards across the city.

The mayor underscored the need for stringent enforcement of building regulations, specifically targeting coaching centers operating commercial activities in basements in violation of safety norms. She called for immediate action against such establishments to safeguard students and residents.

Furthermore, Oberoi demanded a prompt inquiry to identify any lapses by MCD officials, insisting on the strongest possible measures against those responsible. Her directive underscores a commitment to enhancing safety and accountability in the city’s educational spaces, aiming to prevent future tragedies and ensure public safety.
