New Delhi, June 21,2026 : India celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with great enthusiasm and participation from leaders, yoga practitioners and citizens across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national celebrations from Kolkata’s iconic Red Road, while President Droupadi Murmu participated in the state-level Yoga Day event in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, performing various yoga asanas along with participants.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the growing global significance of yoga and its role in bringing people together. He noted that while June 21 marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, it has also evolved into one of the world’s largest community celebrations because of yoga.
“Yoga brings people together. I extend my greetings to people across the world on this occasion,” the Prime Minister said. He emphasized that yoga is much more than a form of physical exercise. “Yoga is not restricted to any age group or community. It is an expression of the human spirit and a pathway to harmony between the body, mind and soul,” he added.
The celebrations witnessed large-scale participation in cities, towns and villages, with yoga sessions being organised at educational institutions, government offices, public parks and community centres. Several Union Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers and public representatives also took part in the nationwide events.
The theme for International Day of Yoga 2026, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focuses on the importance of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional resilience and active ageing. The theme underscores how regular yoga practice can help individuals maintain a healthy lifestyle, improve flexibility and balance, reduce stress and enhance overall quality of life.
Since its adoption by the United Nations in 2014 following India’s proposal, the International Day of Yoga has emerged as a global movement, inspiring millions across countries to embrace wellness, mindfulness and holistic health through the ancient Indian practice of yoga.
