MANDYA (Karnataka), 25 June: In a tragic incident, five persons, including four women from the same family, drowned in the Cauvery River near the popular tourist destination of Muthathi in Karnataka’s Mandya district on Tuesday evening.
According to police officials, the victims had visited the scenic riverbank area with family members when the accident occurred. Preliminary reports suggest that one of the women slipped into the river while attempting to get closer to the water. In an effort to rescue her, the others entered the river but were caught in the strong current and swept away.
Local residents and visitors who witnessed the incident immediately alerted authorities. Rescue teams, including personnel from the police, fire and emergency services, rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. After several hours of intensive efforts, all five bodies were recovered from the river.
The deceased reportedly belonged to the same extended family and had come to Muthathi for a leisure outing. The sudden tragedy has left relatives and local residents in deep shock and grief.
Muthathi, located on the banks of the Cauvery River and surrounded by forested areas, is a popular picnic and pilgrimage destination that attracts thousands of visitors every year. However, authorities have repeatedly cautioned tourists against venturing into deep waters or ignoring safety advisories, particularly during periods of strong river flow.
Senior district officials visited the site and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. A case has been registered, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances leading to the drowning incident.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the need for stricter safety measures, warning signs, and increased vigilance at tourist spots along riverbanks to prevent similar accidents in the future. Local authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution and avoid entering unfamiliar or potentially dangerous sections of the river.
