New Delhi, August 7: India Bhutan Power cooperation received a fresh boost on Friday as Union Power Minister Manohar Lal and Bhutan’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering met in New Delhi to review hydropower projects, renewable energy collaboration and cross-border electricity trade.
The discussions took place between Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal and Bhutan’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Gem Tshering. The meeting focused on strengthening the long-standing energy partnership that has played a significant role in bilateral relations for decades.
Both sides reviewed the status of ongoing joint initiatives and explored opportunities to broaden cooperation in electricity generation, power transmission, institutional coordination and technical capacity building. The leaders also assessed the functioning of existing bilateral mechanisms that facilitate regular dialogue and implementation of energy projects.
Several strategically important hydropower projects, including Punatsangchhu-I, Punatsangchhu-II, Sankosh and Chukha, were discussed during the meeting. The ministers reviewed their progress and highlighted the importance of timely execution to enhance clean energy production and strengthen regional power connectivity.
The two countries also emphasized the growing role of renewable energy and cross-border electricity trade in ensuring sustainable economic growth and improving regional energy security. Both governments agreed that continued coordination and closer engagement would help unlock new opportunities for mutual development.
Reiterating India‘s commitment to its long-standing partnership with Bhutan, Manohar Lal assured continued support for collaborative energy initiatives. Bhutan, in turn, expressed appreciation for India’s cooperation and conveyed its intention to further expand bilateral engagement in the power sector.
The meeting concluded with both ministers expressing confidence in the future of India-Bhutan energy ties and reaffirming their shared objective of advancing projects that contribute to the economic progress and energy security of both nations.
Officials said stronger energy cooperation between India and Bhutan is expected to support clean energy goals, improve regional electricity connectivity and create long-term economic benefits for both countries.
