Deadly Lucknow Building Blaze Raises Questions Over Development Authority’s Oversight

Records reveal the Aliganj building that caught fire had faced demolition proceedings in 2016 over alleged unauthorised construction before the order was revoked.

Lucknow,23 JUNE 2026: The devastating fire that claimed 15 lives in Aliganj, Lucknow, has brought the role of the development authority under intense scrutiny after records revealed that the affected building had once faced demolition proceedings over alleged unauthorised construction.

The blaze broke out on Monday, June 22, 2026, in a building located in Sector D of the Aliganj Scheme. As investigations into the tragedy continue, documents have surfaced showing that the structure had been issued a demolition order in 2016. The order, however, was reportedly revoked less than two months later, raising questions about the circumstances under which the decision was reversed and whether adequate safety checks were carried out thereafter.

According to official records, the property, identified as Building No. MS/102/D, was originally allotted on July 11, 1980, to Vijay Kumar, son of Rameshwar Sahay, through a lottery conducted under a hire-purchase scheme. Following the execution of the agreement on November 4, 1980, possession of the property was handed over to the allottee.

In 2005, ownership of the property was formally transferred to Vijay Kumar and his wife, Usha, through a registered sale deed. Over the years, the building reportedly underwent modifications, leading to concerns about unauthorised construction. These concerns resulted in the development authority initiating demolition proceedings in 2016. However, the withdrawal of the demolition order shortly afterward has now become a key point of focus in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Authorities are examining whether any structural violations or lapses in compliance may have contributed to the fire and the high death toll. The incident has also reignited concerns over enforcement of building regulations and fire safety norms in urban areas.

As grieving families seek answers, officials are expected to review past approvals, inspections and regulatory actions linked to the building. The tragedy has underscored the need for stricter monitoring of building safety standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
