Ajnala: Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh was on Saturday remanded to judicial custody until April 30 by a local court in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station siege case.
The Punjab Police produced him before the court through videoconferencing from Dibrugarh, where he is currently lodged. The court order came after the completion of his two-day police remand, with the prosecution choosing not to seek further custody.
Defence counsel confirmed that the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for April 30. Following the court’s direction, Singh has been sent back to jail in Dibrugarh.
Singh had earlier been detained under the National Security Act, with his detention period ending on April 22. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court allowed the state government to continue holding him at the same facility.
The case pertains to the February 2023 incident in Ajnala, where Singh and his supporters allegedly stormed a police station to secure the release of an aide. Multiple charges were filed, including attempt to murder, assault on police personnel, and obstruction of public servants.
Authorities had launched a statewide crackdown against his outfit, Waris Punjab De, in March 2023 after he evaded arrest. He was later taken into custody in April that year following a prolonged search operation.
The latest development marks another step in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the high-profile case.
