New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department has released a detailed heatwave advisory as temperatures continue to climb across large parts of the country, raising concerns over public health and safety.
According to the latest assessment, several regions in northwest, central, and peninsular India are already recording maximum temperatures between 40°C and 44°C. The highest temperature so far has been reported in Sri Ganganagar, where the mercury touched 44.5°C. In many areas, temperatures are running significantly above normal levels, indicating increasing heat stress conditions.
The weather department has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to develop in isolated pockets of northern and central regions, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, as well as parts of the Himalayan belt. At the same time, coastal and eastern areas are expected to face hot and humid conditions, while northern plains may experience unusually warm nights, increasing discomfort.
The IMD stated that temperatures in northwest India are likely to remain steady until April 27 before gradually declining. However, central and some southern regions may see a further rise before any relief is expected.
In its advisory, the department has urged citizens to take preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Key recommendations include limiting exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, staying hydrated, wearing light and breathable clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.
Special caution has been advised for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions. Authorities also stressed the importance of early awareness and preparedness to reduce health risks.
The IMD’s extended outlook suggests that heatwave conditions could persist over the next week across several parts of northwest and central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, coastal states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are expected to face hot and humid weather conditions.
Looking ahead, the department’s seasonal outlook for April to June indicates above-normal heatwave days in several regions, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and preparedness.
Citizens have been advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow safety guidelines to minimise the impact of extreme heat.
