19 Tamil Nadu Fishermen Return from Sri Lankan Detention, Renew Focus on Maritime Dispute

Released after nearly a month in custody, the fishermen returned to Chennai as calls grow for the release of others still detained and a long-term solution to recurring Palk Strait tensions.

Chennai: Nineteen fishermen from Tamil Nadu returned home on Tuesday after being released from detention in Sri Lanka, bringing relief to their families while once again spotlighting unresolved tensions over fishing rights in the Palk Strait.

The fishermen, all from Ramanathapuram district, arrived in Chennai after spending nearly a month in custody following their detention by Sri Lankan authorities over allegations of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Their return was marked by emotional scenes at the airport, where relatives welcomed them back after weeks of uncertainty.

The group had been detained on March 25 and later remanded following court proceedings in Sri Lanka. Their release comes amid diplomatic engagement between India and Sri Lanka and is being viewed as a positive development in an issue that has repeatedly strained relations between fishing communities and maritime authorities.

One of the released fishermen said many others remain imprisoned and appealed for continued government intervention to secure their release.

While the fishermen have returned, concerns remain over the fate of their seized boats, which are considered essential to the livelihoods of coastal families in the region.

The episode has once again highlighted the recurring problem faced by Indian fishermen operating in the Palk Strait, where disputes over traditional fishing access and maritime boundaries have led to repeated arrests, boat seizures and diplomatic friction.

Officials continue to engage with Sri Lankan authorities over pending cases and broader efforts to address the long-running dispute, with fishing communities urging a durable solution that protects both livelihoods and bilateral interests.
