Laughter Turns to Tragedy as Three Girls Drown at Mulagummi Waterfall

Slippery terrain and strong currents turn outing fatal as police urge caution at tourist spots

Visakhapatnam: What began as a cheerful outing ended in tragedy when three teenage girls drowned while attempting to take selfies near a waterfall in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district.

According to police, the incident took place in the scenic Ananthagiri Hills, where four girls had gone for a day trip. While standing on slippery rocks close to the waterfall, they reportedly lost balance and fell into the water.

Officials said the strong current quickly pulled them in, and none of the girls knew how to swim, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Hearing cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and managed to save one of the girls, who was later taken to a nearby hospital. However, the other three—Trisha (17), Ratnakumari (16), and Pavitra (16)—could not be rescued.

Police teams later recovered their bodies and have initiated an investigation into the incident.

Authorities noted that although the waterfall may appear calm, the terrain around it is highly slippery and the water currents can be deceptively strong. Such conditions often pose serious risks to visitors, especially in remote forest areas.

Following the incident, police have urged tourists to avoid taking selfies in dangerous locations and to maintain a safe distance from water bodies. Visitors have also been advised to exercise extra caution in unfamiliar terrain.
