President Droupadi Murmu Strengthens India–Botswana Ties During Historic State Visit

INDIA IS COMMITTED TO WORKING CLOSELY WITH BOTSWANA TO FURTHER DEEPEN ITS TIES: PRESIDENT DROUPADI MURMU

(Gaborone)Botswana , November 12-  In a landmark moment for India–Africa relations, President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Gaborone, Botswana, marking the first-ever Presidential visit from India to Botswana. The visit, which follows her engagements in Angola, represents a significant step toward enhancing India’s diplomatic and developmental cooperation with Southern Africa.

The President is accompanied by Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways, Shri V. Somanna, and Members of Parliament Shri Parbhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava and Smt. D. K. Aruna on this official visit.

President Murmu was accorded a warm welcome by H.E. Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, at the Presidential Office in Gaborone. During their one-to-one and delegation-level talks, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas such as:

  • Trade and Investment

  • Agriculture and Renewable Energy

  • Health, Education, and Skill Development

  • Defence and Digital Technology

President Murmu noted that this visit marks a new chapter in bilateral relations, especially as both nations approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026.

“India is committed to working closely with Botswana to further deepen our ties and to expand our partnership with Africa within the framework of the India–Africa Forum Summit,” the President said.

One of the highlights of the discussions was Botswana’s participation in the next phase of India’s ‘Project Cheetah’, a flagship wildlife conservation initiative aimed at reintroducing cheetahs into India’s ecosystems.

President Murmu thanked President Boko and the people of Botswana for agreeing to send their cheetahs to India, describing it as a “symbol of friendship and shared ecological responsibility.”

“This unique initiative not only strengthens biodiversity but also deepens our partnership in environmental sustainability,” she said.

Both leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement on pharmacopoeia, which will facilitate access to quality and affordable Indian medicines for the people of Botswana.

In a gesture of solidarity, President Murmu also announced India’s decision to supply essential anti-retroviral (ARV) medicines to Botswana, responding to a request from its government.

These measures are expected to further bolster India’s image as a trusted development partner in Africa, particularly in the health and pharmaceutical sectors.

Welcoming President Murmu, President Boko described India as the “Mother of Democracy” and praised India’s role in supporting Botswana’s development journey. He acknowledged President Murmu’s commitment to education, gender equality, and empowerment of marginalized communities, noting that this visit was the first State Visit hosted by Botswana since he took office last year — a reflection of the importance his government places on relations with India.

The talks concluded with both nations expressing optimism about the future of India–Botswana cooperation, particularly in innovation, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.

President Murmu’s visit is being seen as a major milestone in India’s engagement with Africa, aligning with the nation’s vision of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — the world as one family — and reinforcing India’s commitment to global south solidarity.
