Chandigarh– There are words that by mere mentioning it one may find themselves in a curiosity. In Punjab a single word is Phaphey Kuttniyan. It is used to refer to those women who, either intentionally or accidentally, turn constructors of chaos- gossiping, feigning controversy, and stirring the pot even when the fire is not there. They are smart, quick-tongued and usually the life of any discussion, though perhaps for the wrong reasons. This term has over the years become a cliche, a cultural stereotype with which the Punjabis can identify immediately.
New Punjabi film Phaphey Kuttniyan describes this spirit humorously, dramatically and in some unexpected turns. It may appear at first that this is the story of two common women who dominate the kitty-party circles of Punjab with their chatter, gossip and their wit. But as the film unfolds, the tone shifts. Through a police investigation, the layers of deceit, motives and a game that is much larger than anyone had anticipated is revealed.
What was originally the tale of two women gradually turns out to be a group of six with their respective flavor, secrets, and eccentricities to the adventure. As each character is added, the plot becomes more complicated and fun, too. The result? The ride of the entertainment in which gossip becomes drama, drama becomes a thrilling story. You must watch it in the theatres to have the most to get a taste of the way the mess turns into comedy and suspense.
The movie was introduced all over the world on 22 nd August and it has already begun to raise discussions among Punjabi communities all over the world. The film directed by Prem Sidhu, written by a renowned storyteller Jagdeep Sidhu, and beautifully shot by cinematographer Sandeep Patil is sure to attract some visual delight as well as the entertaining script.

One of the largest highlights is the star cast. The protagonist of the Punjabi cinema, Neeru Bajwa, is playing the show with her perfect screen presence and the others are talented Tania, Gurbaz Singh, Nisha Bano and Amrit Amby. The ensemble is delicious to look at as every actor contributes a different flavor to the story.
However, one of the well-known actors is creating a special headline- Annu Priya as Anju.
And the story of the way of the Punjab cinema told by Annu Priya of Samastipur, Bihar is as encouraging as it is invigorating. She is a graduate of National School of Drama (Batch 2023) with talent and depth in her character that has astonished audiences to their contentment. Her audiences have applauded her to come up with an identity of her own in a star-laden cast- something only few new actors can do.
It is not the first time she tried acting. It is her second release following Kariyatthi released on the OTT platform Waves which is operated by Government of India and is available completely free. Recently she has been completing work with TVF on a series soon on Amazon prime video among other series that has already been scheduled.
What is interesting about Annu is not her performance alone but her versatility. Besides acting, she likes singing and enjoys the exploration of other languages and cultures. To her, each part is not a rehearsal but an experiment.
Phaphey Kuttniyan is not an ordinary comedy-drama. It can be regarded as a mirror of social structure of Punjabi families where gossip and chat are not only a form of entertainment but also a way of having relationships, playing against a rivalry and power. The film brings people to the point of laughing, contemplating and riding the waves by transforming this ordinary cultural phenomenon into a movie.
So, go, either with the star cast or the plot or just to have the drama on the big screen and Phaphey Kuttniyan does not leave anybody disappointed.
