Haryana government intensifies efforts to clean Yamuna: DC Vikram Singh

Faridabad: The Haryana government is taking firm steps towards making the Yamuna River pollution-free. In this direction, the state’s Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi held a comprehensive review meeting on Thursday through video conferencing with all concerned departments and stakeholders to assess the pollution levels in the Yamuna.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary issued clear instructions to identify and list all drains discharging into the river. He emphasized that effective remedial actions should be prioritized and implemented accordingly. Additionally, he directed that the capacity and functioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs) be regularly reviewed to prevent the flow of untreated wastewater into the river.

Rajeev Kumar Mittal, Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga under the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, presented a detailed PowerPoint presentation. It outlined the sources of dirty water entering the Yamuna, the conditions of associated drains, and the need for immediate treatment.

Following the video conference, Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh instructed officials to strictly prohibit the illegal discharge of sewage and industrial waste into the Yamuna. He directed officials from the Urban Local Bodies Department, Irrigation Department, Pollution Control Board, Water and Sanitation Department, and industrial zones to work in close coordination.

Emphasizing accountability at every level, DC Singh said that all urban bodies must ensure that STPs operate smoothly and no untreated water is allowed to enter the river. He stressed on the need for regular monitoring of these systems. Furthermore, he instructed district officials to conduct local inspection drives and take stringent action against those polluting the Yamuna.

The meeting was attended by SDM Trilok Chand and officials from various relevant departments.
